posted on 19.01.10 Folk Rock - Feel Happy Music

When life gets heavy we sometimes need music to even us out. For me, the ultimate feel good tunes come in the unexpected form of Folk Rock. The extreme diversity of instruments, unique voices, and quality story lines help your mind escape your everyday situation. Below are a few top picks from two legit Folk Rock ensembles: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Port O’Brien

Sometimes you need to focus in on your work grind and turn your speakers up so loud your roommates are like, ‘WTF!?’ And you are like, ‘F you - Ima do me!’

In that spirit, we present Sleigh Bells: Out of Brooklyn, this boy/girl duo have some seriously hard hitting instrumentals. We can’t really understand what is going on, but damn that ish is loud. So turn it up and don’t stop until you piss someone off!

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

I went to church every Sunday through high school, but have admittedly fallen off the religion train since then. However, if bands like the Moondoggies played every Sunday morning, I imagine we all might be asking forgiveness for our Saturday night sins more often.

I caught the Miike Snow (click for all BDN coverage) show in ‘The City’ earlier this week, and Jack Peñate put on a fun opening set. It is also worth noting Miike Snow stopped using an autotuner in their live performances.

Jack Peñate has definitely got an eccentric British musician thing going on, as revealed in his videos below. The ‘Pull My Heart Away’ video was shot in the same location as Indian Jones Raiders of the Lost Arc - And who doesn’t love that?

posted on 15.07.09 BDN Upgrades…Your Coffee With The Bodum French Press!

You know that Krupps or Mr. Coffee machine sitting on your kitchen counter? It’s lame. It looks like it was designed in 1972 (it was) and it only reveals a portion of you coffee’s potential.

Enter the Bodum French Press - Your design conscious upgrade to better tasting coffee.

The french press requires coarsly ground beans, so have your local bean shop use their burr grinder. If you use a blade grinder you will get un uneven grind and some of the beans will get into your coffee when you press. Buying in small weekly increments will ensure the beans are fresh. Pour hot water over the ground beans, stir with a plastic spoon, let them soak for 4-5 minutes, press slowly, and enjoy you new favorite beverage..behind Tecate beer with salt and lime juice of course.

posted on 09.07.09 Miike Snow - Concert Review

Right now it is hard to go to a party and avoid bobbing your head along with at least one Miike Snow song. We have been pumping this into our ear lobes for a while now, and 3 weeks ago (sorry for the delay) we got a chance to check out a show at one of my favorite intimate venues in The City.

You know it is go time when 6 dudes walk on the stage in matching black nylon jackets. Front man Pontus Winnberg (you have to do something amazing with that name) did not speak a word outside of his singing, which was all done through an autotuner. And no words were needed - I have never seen guys rock so hard on only beat machines and keyboards. The Miike Snow show is a definite must, once they return from their European tour.

posted on 20.06.09 BDN Approved: Cereal, Not Just for Kids

When was the last time you got down on a big bowl of cherios or frosted mini-wheats? If you cut the delicious milk soaked treat out of your diet after moving out of your rents’ spot, you have been seriously misguided. The beauty of cereal as an adult, is that it doesn’t have to be breakfast. Eggs and bacon often hit the spot in the morning, but an afternoon or late night snack of some quality fiber with milk really does it. Now that you shop for yourself and understand the complexities of life - get creative with it. No one cereal can satiate your tast buds through an entire bowl, so mix it up with 2 or even 3 kinds of cereal to create a truly unique concoction. Brand names can get pretty pricy in certain parts of the country ($5 a box hurts), so look for the store brand supersized box (or bag) that will make multiple varietals reasonable. For us, the logical choice is Mom’s Best. Your going to heart this.

posted on 11.06.09 BDN Gets Cultured

So..I put my fancy pants gear on last night and checked out the American Ballet Theater’s rendition of Giselle. My night at the ballet reaffirmed several loves of mine: Violins (there were some guys rocking out in the orchestra), Champagne (during intermission on the balcony of the Met), and Wilis…(the main chick dies of heartbreak and becomes a Wili, “virgins who have died of unrequited love”)..Yea, now the list makes more sense. Enjoy a quick snapshot of some culture for yourself below.
