Dan Funderburgh is a wallpaper designer and artist in Brooklyn, NY. His patterns, prints and installations are varied in content but all demonstrate an unabashed love for decorative arts. I’m a total pattern junkie and have frequented Dan’s work as a source of inspiration for years.  Here’s his full portfolio: http://www.danfunderburgh.com/#

posted on 15.07.09 BDN Upgrades...Your Coffee With The Bodum French Press!

You know that Krupps or Mr. Coffee machine sitting on your kitchen counter? It’s lame. It looks like it was designed in 1972 (it was) and it only reveals a portion of you coffee’s potential.

Enter the Bodum French Press - Your design conscious upgrade to better tasting coffee.

The french press requires coarsly ground beans, so have your local bean shop use their burr grinder. If you use a blade grinder you will get un uneven grind and some of the beans will get into your coffee when you press. Buying in small weekly increments will ensure the beans are fresh. Pour hot water over the ground beans, stir with a plastic spoon, let them soak for 4-5 minutes, press slowly, and enjoy you new favorite beverage..behind Tecate beer with salt and lime juice of course.

I stumbled across this artists website recently and find myself continually going back for more. She constructs 3d models as her subject, creating a surreal yet life-like little world in each of her paintings. See more: www.amybennett.com

“AJ Fosik’s eclectic handmade and intricately designed wood animal sculptures and paintings, combined with cryptic symbols, intrigue and provoke. Inspired by subversive cultural influences which shift complacency, he creates pieces that suspend comfort while at the same time offer recognizable symbols and images.  In this dynamic tension the art and the viewer hopefully come together in an expanded definition of culture and assumption.”

Here are two very simplistic animations I found from artist Richard McGuire who was one of the graphic designers that collaborated on the very cool, under-the-radar film: “Fears of the Dark.” In addition to his animation work, Richard is the founder and bass player of the band Liquid Liquid. He is a regularly contributing artist to the The New Yorker magazine, has created comics, and written/illustrated children’s books.

Neubau Welt is an extensive encyclopedia of well over a thousand pictograms of everyday objects and obsessions large and small. They were created by designer Stefan Gandl. All of the objects shown in the book can also be found as Adobe Illustrator files on an included CD. Giving you the right to use the exclusive graphics and Neubau typefaces on your own work.

Neubau Welt contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn’t find on Google. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects can be enlarged indefinitely. This also makes them extremely useful for architects and other creatives, who can integrate them into their presentations and visual models. You can also download individual sheets of images at: http://www.neubauladen.com/

posted on 03.06.09 Chris Anderson Thinks Crazy Face

Several awesome things are happening right now:

Chris Anderson, the editor of Wired Magazine, is continuing to perplex people with innovative approaches to business. The dude is a scientist living in the business world. Scientists always piss off business people because they approach problems diferently and usually create a better solution than their b-school trained counterparts. Mr. Anderson is following up on his debut book, The Long Tail, with another highly anticipated book, Free. Free will confront the biggest obstacle for most consumers: paying money for stuff. Try wrapping your head around how companies can get rich by giving stuff away for free..We are definitely down if someone can make it work.

Chris’s day job is at Wired Magazine. They just won the American Society of Magazine Editor’s (ASME) award for General Excellence in Design. This means your eyes get a treat while your mind gets blown. A few gems from the June issue include how to make vintage speakers sounds awesome on the cheap and The New Economy with Googlenomics (More startups, fewer giants, infinite opportunity!). Go buy an issue or check it online.
