If you live in Colorado and have not heard about the addition to DIA you have been living under a rock. Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has unveiled his preliminary designs for the airports south terminal redevelopment program. The concept for the redevelopment will not only enhance the airport’s connectivity and functionality, but is also expected to create more than 6,600 jobs.

The project is one of the largest in the country. It includes the construction of a signature rail bridge, a terminal train station, a 500-room hotel and conference center and a multi-function civic plaza complete with retail and concessions. The rail station, plaza and hotel will form a highly integrated and dynamic complex, located directly south of the Jeppeson Terminal.

As Denver International Airport continues to expand its role as an economic engine for the city and county of Denver and the state of Colorado, it will transform into a micro-city, with increased revenue potential. The new hotel and conference center are key components of this new development, along with a civic plaza that provides restaurants and commercial retail, as well as space for special programs including exhibitions, art fairs and other special events.

Habitat 67 is a housing complex and landmark located on the Marc-Drouin Quay on the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Canada. Its design was created by architect Moshe SafdieIt was designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment buildin. Modular, interlocking concrete forms define the space. The project was designed to create affordable housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a garden. The building was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle people would live in increasingly crowded cities around the world.

The complex was originally meant to be vastly larger. Ironically, due to its architectural cachet, demand for the building’s units have made them expensive rather than “affordable” as originally envisioned.

Neubau Welt is an extensive encyclopedia of well over a thousand pictograms of everyday objects and obsessions large and small. They were created by designer Stefan Gandl. All of the objects shown in the book can also be found as Adobe Illustrator files on an included CD. Giving you the right to use the exclusive graphics and Neubau typefaces on your own work.

Neubau Welt contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn’t find on Google. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects can be enlarged indefinitely. This also makes them extremely useful for architects and other creatives, who can integrate them into their presentations and visual models. You can also download individual sheets of images at: http://www.neubauladen.com/

posted on 24.02.09 Bailout Rule #1: Screw the Big 3, Get a Smarter 3

We recently reconnected with our old friend Miles Wheeler from CU while travelling through Seattle and got the low down on a sweet project he has been working on for some time now. He is the Aerodynamics Engineer for Aptera Motors, a California based three wheeled car designer and manufacturer.

Let’s be honest, it looks a bit wild, maybe too wild. Or is it? On further examination of its features and mind-boggling efficiency, this could just be the perfect commuter car, especially if you live somewhere it doesn’t snow. The most basic principle they are using to their advantage that no other production vehicle has embraced is being aerodynamic. They boldly state that most cars exert 50% of their energy pushing air out of the way…50%…that’s a lot of wasted energy. With the 2e they have all but eliminated this problem. The 2e is 100% battery powered, and when plugged in to your wall socket only costs $.50 to recharge after driving 100 miles, has a range of 120 miles per charge, and gets an equivalent 300 mpg! Holy monkey testicles, this sounds unreal, but its true. And at only $28,000, the math is painfully easy to justify jumping in one ASAP.

OK, so you still don’t think you are ready to be that forward thinking, you’d rather wait for the Chevy Volt cause its bigger and faster (well, bigger yes, but the 2e goes 90mph, not bad.) I mean, where am I gonna put my golf clubs, skateboard, snowboard, surfboard, sub-woofer, groceries and the always problematic dead hooker. There cant possibly be a place for all that in a three wheeled electric car that looks like a submarine? Oh, but there is.

How about a place for my iPhone?

OK, but you cant tell me that it has Lamborghini doors, that would just be too good to be true…

Oh yeah, and if that wasn’t enough, the solar panels on the roof run the climate control system. I cant even find the right expletive to describe my befuddlery, this car kicks ass!

So, go to the website, get learned on what Aptera is all about, tell your friends, and get on the waiting list cause this is gonna be the hottest bohemian hipster accessory of a lifetime.
