Big Ant International won a Gold Pencil for Design (Public Service Poster) at the One Show Design Awards for these four posters designed to wrap around poles, campaigning for an end to the war in Iraq, pointing to the Global Coalition for Peace web site. Grenades, rifles, missiles and tank guns come round the pole to catch up with the aggressor in each poster. What goes around comes around. The campaign won a Silver Pencil at the One Show and has also been shortlisted at the Clio 2009 (WON GOLD) and D&AD Awards, and won a Gold Outdoors Lion at Cannes International Advertising Festival.

It happened, I finally broke down. I have been holding back from you a growing collection of remix masterpieces from Brooklyn’s own Alan Wilkis for much to long now and have decided to make good.

Alan recently just released a downtempo remix of RJD2’s The Shining Path that has been getting a lot of well deserved attention on hype machine. The track highlights his trademark funk heavy, dancefloor ready sound. Alan Wilkis remixes permiate my playlists and some of my favorites to date include the heavily blogged about remix of Yeasayer’s Ambling Amp, Phoenix’s chartbuster 1901, Chester French’s C’mon, and Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition, far and above my favorite remix of 2009.

Ok folks, time to bring you all a very special musical treat. My inbox gets hit all the time with unknown artists saying ‘check me out.’ Sometimes they are less than amazing or just a bit of work away from making the BDN cut, but when I got an email from Deskhop the other day, I must say I was blown away.

He compared his sound to Girl Talk and E-603, two of my favorite mash-up laptop-dj’s. I’ve heard that before, so I was skeptical of the actual product. Click play….”Holy shit, this is rad!” I say to myself while bumping my macbook speakers beyond their manufactured limitations. After repeated listens I agree that Deskhop fills a seat in the class of pop-hop mash-up greats and passes with straight A’s.

He has two releases, a 50 Cent sample riddin full length album from the summer of 2008 titled ‘Spaceheater’ and a Three Six Mafia heavy four track ep called ‘Variations on the Sensible Manifold’ released January 2009. Both can be attained from his website on a “pay what you want” system from $0 to $infinity, and beyond. Their is a slight but noticable growth in his production skills from ‘Spaceheater’ to ‘Variations,’ but both are truly entertaining and worthy of significant praise.

I had a chance to pick Deskhop’s brain with a short interview where he talks about his inspirations and what we can expect in 2010, here is what he had to say.

WJ: Where do you reside?

DH: I go to school in upstate New York, at Cornell University.

WJ: Who is your most significant musical influence?

DH: If I had to choose one, it’s got to be Girl Talk. There’s obviously a lot of influence there. I started producing around the time Unstoppable came out, so it’s been really wild watching him break into the mainstream. I’ve also learned from people like Oh Astro, Deepak Mantena, and ‘N Sync.

WJ: Mac or PC?

DH: PC. But it’s coated in Red Bull and Colt 45 (the ‘R’ key is completely shot, I’m currently typing on an external keyboard), so I’ll be looking for a replacement soon.

WJ: What does 2010 have in store for Deskhop?

DH: I’m doing a few more college shows this spring, then dropping a new full-length, professionally-mastered album. It’s been a year since Variations, and in that time I’ve been mostly working on live stuff and playing live. So I’m really excited to drop the new album. Expect that around May.

WJ: Five artists we should look out for?

DH: Hmm, I don’t know — isn’t that your department?

WJ: Why did you decide to release your music via “Pay What You Want” and how has that worked for you so far?

DH: I benefit from the free transit of music, so I think my listeners should benefit as well. Plus, it’s a good way to get my stuff out there, to get people listening. I’ve had a bunch of really generous donations, which mean even more this way.

WJ: What impact have music blogs had on your art and which have been the most important to you?

DH: I’ve gotten a few very nice reviews, one in Washington University’s Eleven Magazine, one on Wampoholic, but for the most part my music hasn’t hit the blog scene. At this point, I get most of my feedback, support and motivation from individual fans — I love going out and playing for people, interacting with the audience, making a connection and seeing how much I can screw with the sound without losing that connection.

We can’t wait to see what Deskhop bangs out this summer, until then we will be rocking his tracks non-stop. Do yourself a favor and get both albums and donate whatever you can, even just a couple bucks, Im sure he would appreciate it! Also be sure to check out his live shows if you are in the Northeast and let us know how sweaty you get.

Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old (or relatively limited) computer and video games are mostly pixel art.

eBoy (“Godfathers of Pixel”) is a Pixel Art group founded in 1997 by Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital.

Their complex illustrations have been made into posters, shirts, souvenirs, and even displayed in gallery exhibitions. They were founded on May 2, 1997, expressing their modular and collaborative approach as something that defines eBoy as much as the use of pixels. Based in Berlin, eBoy’s founders collaborate with Peter Stemmler in New York to produce graphic design work for companies. Their work makes intense use of popular culture and commercial icons, and their style is presented in three-dimensional isometric illustrations filled with robots, cars, guns and girls. Mostly their designs are printed today and not used solely for computer screens anymore, allowing images to get more complex with details. Their unique style has gained them a cult following among graphic designers worldwide, as well as a long list of commercial clients. Their latest project are plastic Peecol toys with Kidrobot, and soon a new line of wooden toys are to be produced under their own label.

eBoy has worked with named brands and companies such as Coca-Cola, MTV, VH1, Adidas, and Honda.

I love Pixel Art because it Reminds me of my all time favorite video game Sim City 2000

Habitat 67

Habitat 67 is a housing complex and landmark located on the Marc-Drouin Quay on the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Canada. Its design was created by architect Moshe Safdie. It was designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment buildin. Modular, interlocking concrete forms define the space.The project was designed to create affordable housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a garden. The building was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle people would live in increasingly crowded cities around the world.

The complex was originally meant to be vastly larger. Ironically, due to its architectural cachet, demand for the building’s units have made them expensive rather than “affordable” as originally envisioned.

Wired Magazine takes the leap

While we are on the subject of magazines, I thought it wise to mention one of my favorite print publications, Wired, and the future it is entering with the development of an iPad friendly version of the magazine. As you can see in the video below, the user experience of traditional print media and new multimedia rich online content is soon to be married in the immanent media renaissance via a variety of tablet devices entering the market similar to and including Apple’s iPad.

I agree that this is where the tablet will see its best use: the tried and true presentation of words and pictures mixed with the on demand media at the touch of a finger our generation has grown a custom to. These are definitely exciting times for publishers and advertisers alike, as well as consumers eager to interact with what interests them in new ways. We are optimistic that the tablet publications will not be the death of print media as a whole, but rather the ushering in of a new era in media consumption.
